Her sentence:
The neon sign in the window said, almost cheerfully, open.
from The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
An appositive phrase set apart by commas, deliberately, to describe the noun.
My sentence:
My mother called for me, very angrily, telling me to clean my room.

Appositives must be NOUNS. This is actually just an adverb describing how it "said."
